A cozy Thursday night dinner at Parallax, a hip yet laid back restaurant in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood, left me convinced that Parallax is home to the best sushi in Cleveland, hands down. We shared a number of different rolls. The spicy tuna there is excellent, but I also recommend the spicy salmon, which is full of flavor. I also recommend the eel and the shrimp rolls.

We got some sort of deep-friend sushi roll as an appetizer, which I am sure is braking some rules, but it was a roll of excellent scallops, squid and other seafood, dipped in a tempura batter and lightning-fried to a crisp. It came with an amazing bouillabaise to dip in, and it was amazing!

In addition to the sushi options, they also have a lot of regular dishes to choose from. Mostly they are seafood, but they also have some vegetarian options. I recommend the crab-crusted salmon.

They have excellent wine selections, the service is excellent, and it’s not snooty! In fact, as we were leaving the restaurant, the friendly hostess had already gotten our coats that we had checked upon arrival, and the owner thanked us for coming in and wished us a good night. Good company, good food, good times!

Lucky’s Cafe, located in the Tremont neighborhood, is an amazing weekend brunch place!

It’s a little disorganized – when you come in, you wait in line and order, then you have to fend for yourselves to try to get a table. It was packed for brunch when I was there on Sunday. Once you get your table, though, the service is friendly and the food is amazing!

I had the homemade granola with plain yogurt, honey, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, mango and apple. Loved it! The shipwreck was a tasty jumble of potatoes, bacon, eggs, cheese, etc. and the toast was super yummy and soaked in butter. The corn griddle cakes were super yummy too!

This recent NY Times article says it all about double-dipping: Don’t do it.

I used to work with a double-dipper, and let me tell you, it was gross.

Is milk chocolate the new dark chocolate?

This recent NY Times article claims that milk chocolate is the new dark chocolate.

At the Great Lakes Science Center‘s Chocolate exhibit this weekend, I picked up a bar of chocolate that advertised itself as “100% cacao.” Has the dark chocolate craze come this far that people will resort to eating ridiculously bitter chocolate for no apparent reason

Has the chocolate market become so oversaturated with bittersweet and dark chocolate that people are demanding more milk chocolate?

Dish Global Deli

Cleveland, Ohio 44113

You might think that Dish Global Deli sounds like it would be the opposite of a meat lover’s paradise. And you’d be right.

This funky little spot on West 25th in Ohio City is the newest fantastic sandwich place as far as I’m concerned. The first time I walked in, the friendly lady behind the counter shook my hand and cheerfully introduced herself as Heather, the owner, and proceeded to make suggestions and answer my questions about the menu items.

While it offers many excellent-sounding vegetarian and vegan options, Dish has plenty to offer a hungry carnivore, including the Talk Turkey with turkey, provolone and apricot relish on pumpernickel; the Guilty Pleasure, with brie, avocado and bacon; and the Tastes Like Chicken with chicken, gouda, carmelized onion and fig jam.

Great veggie sandwiches, too: my fav is the Vegan Shmegan. It’s a grilled wrap with hummus, roasted red peppers, black beans and grilled tempeh. Ask to add feta – it adds a certain je ne sais quoi.

In addition to these great options, Heather always has great specials on the board. Right now, she has a roasted acorn squash filled with rice that looks really good.

One more thing – you must try the vegan chocolate chip cookies. Better than regular ones!

It’s great to have more fresh, healthy lunch spots open up in the area!
